Club History

The East Kent Schoolboy Scrambling Club was founded in July 1981 when more and more youngsters were taking up the sport.  Although the KSSC was already in existence, it was felt that there was a need for another club in the Kent area; otherwise the nearest clubs were Aveley in Essex and Horsham in Surrey.

The Club was founded by: -

Peter Payne        (Owner of Newnham) President
Brian Parsons    (Landlord of the Swan) Chairman
Derek Holt           (Local Farmer) Treasurer
Angela Thomas  Secretary
Derek Blythe General Committee

The Club was then affiliated to the BSMA with Portsmouth being the nearest alternative BSMA affiliated club.  By the end of November 1981 there were 171 members; increasing to 267 by November 1982.

Towards the end of the first year Tich Horsford and Terry Wyles joined the committee and at the beginning of 1982, the Club managed to purchase an ambulance for the Faversham Division of the St.John’s Ambulance Brigade.

For the first 18 months the Club organised meetings once a month as tracks were particularly scarce and the Club only had the use of Newnham and Oare. During the course of the following year, the Club increased its tracks to four, with the further addition of Coombe Valley and Grafty Green.
