24 November 2002 - Newnham

Report by Abbie Wise

The weather held out for the second round of the Winter Championships held at Newnham on Sunday.  Every rider’s skills were tested to the max with a track being as slippery as an eel’s back.

The first race of the Auto group saw little Daniel Clark take the hole shot and absolutely fly around the track to remain unchallenged by all to score an undisputed win.  Good riding was seem from Ryan Thomerson and Toby Stubberfield .

Daniel Brown took the hole shot in the first race of the Juniors but Kray Still rapidly overtook him.  Still stayed in the lead followed by James Hatchinson who was hot on his heels and in a game of cat and mouse Hatchinson overtook Still to win the race.  Jack Ploughman and Brown maintained their dignity by scoring 3rd and 4th place respectively.

In the Inter 85 class Ben Taylor (who we think had a rocket up his exhaust pipe!) screeched off the start gate in both races to take the hole shot.  After the first lap in the first race Aaron Morgan took the lead followed closely by Taylor and Matt Hornby.  Taylor was really going for some and was pulling out all the stops but it was Hornby who pulled himself back up from 3rd to take the lead and secure yet another victory.  The second race was dominated by suicide jumper Stewart Winik who was blasting all the other riders away!  Winik secured a comfortable win and no doubt there will be a celebration cake (don’t forget my piece!).

Phil Sims took the hole shot in the first race of the Open 85 class just ahead of Peter Wise.  Sims maintained first position throughout the race with Wise hot on his tail and finishing in first and second place respectively.  In the second race, it was Wise’s turn to get ahead, grab the hole shot and take the lead but a slippery track took its toll and Brett Robertson took the lead from Wise.  Dean Yates and David Fearne rode well to tot up some good points.

Ben Peay took the 125 class by storm.  The newly upgraded rider had won the first race and looked set to win the second, but Joe Stevens took the hole shot with Peay and Danny Foreman following close behind.  Stevens maintained his lead ahead of Peay and Foreman managed to move up into second place after Peay took a fall at a slippery bend.  Stevens remained well ahead and won the race with Rob Buckland in second position and, after yet another battle, Peay in third and Foreman in fourth.

The AMX saw the mighty Ben Lambert Williams score excellent points with Grant White and Graham Heasman close behind putting the pressure on.

13th October 2002 - Newnham

Report by Abbie Wise

The first round of the winter championships was held at Newnham at the weekend.  With many riders upgrading this was sure to be an exciting and unpredictable first round.

The second moto of the Auto's saw Ryan Thomerson take the hole shot in front of Daniel Packman.  Thomerson pulled a nice lead by the end of the first lap with Toby Stubberfield moving up into second place.  Packman and Samuel Stevens were having a terrific battle for third place with Stevens just beating Packman.  Thomerson won the race undisputed with Stubberfield coming in a respectable second and Samuel Stevens in third.

The ever consistent Kray Still took the hole shot in the second moto of the Junior group but Daniel Brown nipped up the inside of Kray at the second bend and took the lead.  Brown managed to maintain a good lead with Karl Johnson steadily moving up into second place.  Still managed to overtake Johnson and go back up into second place but Brown was just too far ahead for him to make an impact.  Some good riding was also seen from Sean Spring, David Fry and Alex Horey who were up there as well.

A good start to the Winter championships was had by Matthew Hornby in the Inter 85 group.  Hornby led from the hole shot and won each race with enough time to stop and have a cup of tea before any pressure was on him!  Joe Cundle rode well to come in second place with Ben Taylor in third.  Big mouth Tommy Rye who had just upgraded into the Inter 85 group either shouted at the other riders to get out of the way or rode really well (I think the latter!) to score decent places at the meeting and came overall 6th.

The first race of the Open 85 group saw Peter Wise nick the holeshot just ahead of Ben Peay.  Peay overtook Wise halfway through the first lap to take the lead.  Phil Sims was on a mission though and decided that he did not want Peay to have it all his own way and really put the pressure on him.  Sims was right up his exhaust pipe but after making a mistake and slipping off, Peay was home and dry with Sims coming in second and Wise in third.  Daniel Smith who upgraded into the Open 85's rode well in the group and scored good points.  The final race saw Wise grab the hole shot again with Peay taking first place and Wise taking second.

A lot of consistency was seen in the 125 group with Joe Stevens winning his races and Danny Foreman coming in second place followed by Gary Walton and Nathan Preece.  In the second race Stevens won the hole shot and Foreman and Calum Hovvels were desperately battling it out for second position.  Foreman won second place and was right up Stevens' exhaust pipe trying to put as much pressure on as possible.  Foreman decided to try to take Stevens on the inside but Stevens was just too quick and refused to let Foreman pass.  Stevens won by the skin of his teeth with Foreman in second, Walton in third and Preece in fourth.  A good result for Preece who was another rider who had just upgraded and no doubt will be out to cause trouble later on in the championships.

Lance Marshall took the lead ahead of Steve Swift in the second moto of the AMX class.  Grant Lambert decided he was having none of it and shot up the inside of all the other riders to take 3rd position.  Marshall was already brimming with confidence having won his first race and had plenty of airspace between himself and Lambert who had moved up into second place.  Marshall won the race with ease but Lambert with his excellent riding ability is another one to watch out for.  Chris Day, Mark Engham and old boy Steve Bliss all rode well and scored good points.

29th September 2002 - Underriver

Report by Abbie Wise

The final round of the Summer Championships was held at new venue Underriver near Sevenoaks in Kent.  There was some real top riding with some excellent results.

The unstoppable Anthony Twidle got the hole shot in the final race of the Auto group ahead of Aaron Aston.  Twidle was untouchable throughout the race but Aston tried his best with Daniel Clark in third place followed by Ryan Thomerson and Lloyd Sunley.  Twidle won the race with ease followed by Aston.

The third block of the Junior’s had Michael Rye take the lead just ahead of Kray Still.  Still took the lead at the second bend but Rye then snatched the lead back again.  Still remained in second place followed by Ben Taylor, Tommy Rye and Craig Bliss.  Michael Rye and Still had a comfortable lead from the rest of the pack and left the others to battle it out between them for third place.  Tommy Rye took up third position for quite a number of laps and then just at the end of the second to last lap Taylor took the position from him.

Daniel Smith got the holeshot in the second block of the Inter 85 cc class followed by Stewart Winik, Dean Read and Joshua Coomber.  Smith kept his cool and kept ahead of the pack with Dean Read going up into second place.  There was going to be no catching Daniel Smith but the action was really hotting up for second place.  Read remained second with Coomber moving up into third place after Winik had a bad off.  Smith won the race with Read in second riding to the best of his ability and staying ahead of Coomber and Ashleigh Watts.

The first race of the Open 85’s saw Peter Wise ride an absolute blinder grabbing the holeshot ahead of Ben Peay.  Wise went from holeshot to victory in what could only be described as a flawless performance winning his first ever race.  Ben Peay scored in the second race but Wise was not content with winning just one race, and in the third block, after getting past Paul Burr who got the holeshot and Ricky Ball who was running in second, Wise scored yet another win (well done bruv!).

The second block of the 125 cc class saw Keke St Hilaire get the holeshot just ahead of Grant Lambert and Gary Walton but Lambert then promptly took the lead.  Walton then overtook both Keke and Lambert.  The beginning of the race was a real chop and change situation with Grant Lambert eventually scoring the lead over Keke and Walton.  There wasn’t a lot between these top three riders but Lambert suddenly pulled away from the rest of the pack and there was no stopping him.  Farley Ovenden scored a comfortable 4th place.

Kester Gibbons snatched the holeshot ahead of Lance Marshall in the second block of the AMX.  Grant White got into the lead with Gibbons and Lance Marshall trying to get into first position but White was managing to hold onto his lead by the skin of his teeth.  Lance Marshall moved up a place by the fourth lap and then overtook White.  The pressure was on White and he took a bad bend and lost his second place position to Gibbons.  Marshall kept his position to win followed by Gibbons and White.

1st September 2002 - Rakins Hole

Report by Abbie Wise

This Sunday saw the 10th round of the Summer Championships at Rakings Hole.  The weather held out and some excellent racing was seen.

Ben Peay scored a hat trick of wins in the Open 85 cc class.  Nathan Preece grabbed the hole shot in the first race with Ben Peay and Peter Wise behind him but an unfortunate Preece took an early fall leaving Peay and Wise to finish first and second respectively.  The second race saw Phil Sims giving all that he had, which paid off nicely as he finished second behind Peay.

The first race of the Inter 85’s saw Ben Flynn snatch the hole shot ahead of Stewart Winik and Daniel Smith.  Winik took the lead for 4 laps but Smith was right up his exhaust pipe and won the race with Winik behind.  Winik grabbed the hole shot in the second race followed by Smith and Flynn.  Smith and Flynn overtook with Smith winning again.

The 125’s saw Keke St Hilaire shoot past the rest of the pack to the hole shot with Grant Lambert close behind.  Unfortunate Vicky Parkin and Ryan Warren took each other out at the first bend but both were up and in the running shortly after.  Keke was still enjoying a satisfying lead but as Lambert was just getting closer to him, he done an endo over the double jump which took him out of the race completely.  Keke won the race with Calum Hovvels in second and Gary Walton in third.

Lance Marshall got the hole shot in the second AMX race with Grant White behind.  A flawless race by Marshall saw him win by a mile with White maintaining second and Mark Engham making up some valuable points in third.

Michael Rye got the hole shot in the second block of the Juniors but it all proved too much for him as Kray Still had first place in sight and was soon all over Rye like a bad rash.  Attempts by Rye proved fruitless as Still was riding an absolute blinder.  Ben Taylor and Tommy Rye battled it out in the first and second race for third position with one-a-piece in each race.

With Aaron Aston winning the first race of the Auto’s the pressure was on for little Anthony Twidle in the second block.  He grabbed the hole shot ahead of Aston and was determined that he would score a win over his rival.  Twidle rode like a star and scored with Aston in second and Max Coomber came a flying third.

27/28th July 2002 - Chartham

Report by Abbie Wise

The weekend saw a two-day event held at Chartham kindly sponsored by Bakeaways.  The weather was at its hottest which tested the riders to their limits.

Block five of the Auto race saw the impeccable Rob Muscat fly away in front of the others as though he had been shot in the bum!  Muscat was impossible to catch throughout the weekend but brave Aaron Aston and Anthony Twidle gave it their best shot and ended up second and third overall.

The fifth race of the Juniors saw Kray Still nip to the first bend just ahead of Michael Rye.  Still stayed well ahead of Michael Rye throughout the majority of the race.  Some tension was to follow though as Rye took the lead on the last lap ahead of Still but spun out on the very last corner before the finish flag and saw victory snatched away from in front of his face as Still sailed past to claim first.  Ben Taylor, Tommy Rye and Craig Bliss rode consistently well throughout the day.

Daniel Smith got the hole shot just ahead of Stewart Winik in the fourth race of the Inter 85’s.  At the end of the first lap, Smith was still in the lead followed by Ben Flynn and Winik.  Daniel Smith held onto his lead and won the race comfortably.  Matt Hornby and Freddie O’Connor were riding well and scored highly.

The fourth block of the Open 85’s saw Peter Wise steal the hole shot ahead of Louis Waugh.  Waugh and Ben Peay passed Wise and battled it out for first place.  Phil Sims was holding onto 4th place and after a bad start, Nathan Preece clambered up from the back of the pack to reach 5th place.  Waugh won the race easily ahead of Peay and Wise.

The fifth race of the 125 class saw Danny Foreman shoot ahead of the rest of the pack to grab the hole shot.  Once in front there was no catching Foreman with Gary Walton laying in second place followed by Farley Ovenden.  Callum Hovvels was on top banana form at the weekend and came an impressive fourth place overall.

Lance Marshall led the fifth AMX race from start to finish and there was no disputing this top racer.  Steve Swift and Graham Heasman battled it out for second place with Swift taking the position after Heasman crashed out.  Good performances were seen from Greg Tranckle, Mark Engham and Steve Bliss (another golden oldie!).

14th July 2002 - Rakins Hole

Report by Abbie Wise

The ninth round of the Summer championships was held at new track Rakings Hole on Sunday.  The weather conditions were perfect and made for an excellent day’s racing.

The Auto class saw an undisputed Arron Aston take victory after scoring the hole shot easily in the first race.  This little man absolutely flew round the track and left the others for dust.  Meanwhile Rhianne Preece lost out on second place to Max Coomber but girl power does happen and she managed to get second in the next moto.

The second moto of the Juniors saw Michael Rye shot ahead of everyone else to the first bend followed by Karl Johnson and Craig Bliss.  By the end of the first lap Rye was still ahead with Kray Still close behind.  There was a little bit of trouble at the first bend and Bliss managed to move up to third position.  Luke Newman was riding well but a little bit of trouble at one of the jumps hampered him and made him lose out.

Freddie O’Connor was first out of the gates in the second moto of the Inter 85’s with Daniel Smith and Ben Flynn close behind.  Smith managed to overtake by the second bend and O’Connor settled in behind. Flynn came up from the rear and both him and O’Connor collided allowing Joe Cundle to sail through nicely.  Flynn managed to win the final race of the day closely followed by O’Connor and Smith.

Nathan Preece got the hole shot ahead of Ben Peay in the second moto of the Open 85 class.  There was a real battle going on throughout the race as Louis Waugh took the lead from Peay, Preece took the lead from Waugh and managed to hold onto it for a good while but Waugh had decided that he was going to snatch the victory and he did so with style.  Preece settled for second with Peay in third.

Danny Blake snatched the hole shot just ahead of Danny Foreman in the 125 cc class.  Foreman then took the lead at the end of the first lap followed closely by Grant Lambert.  Foreman kept his lead just ahead of Lambert, Gary Walton and Keke St Hilaire.  Lambert crept in front of Foreman near the end of the race and all four riders were on a constant mission to see who could come out on top.  Lambert got through by the skin of his teeth but the other riders certainly kept the pressure on.

The AMX class saw Lance Marshall take the hole shot with Darren Arscott and Andy Welch in second and third respectively.  Marshall maintained his lead followed by Welch and Arscott.  With Marshall leaving a good gap between himself and whoever came second the action was hotting up between Arscott and Welch with Arscott the eventual runner-up.  Top riding was also seen from Steve Bliss and Mark Engham.

30th June 2002 - Chartham

Report by Abbie Wise

This weekend saw the eighth round of the Summer Championships being held at Chartham.  There was a good turn out of riders and weather conditions were just right.

The second race of the Auto’s had Max Harvey take the lead followed by David Collier and Rhianne Preece.  Preece took the lead for a short while but by the second bend Anthony Twidle was right up her exhaust pipe.  However this being a typical moto-x race where anything can happen, the eventual winner was Arron Aston who was absolutely flying. Anthony Twidle remained in second with Daniel Clark and Max Coomber placing respectively.

Daniel Brown scraped the holeshot in the second moto of the Juniors.  Michael Rye was close behind and managed to push his way through to score another consistent win.  Kray Still, Brown, Craig Bliss and Tommy Rye were all battling it out to see who could become top dog behind Michael Rye with Kray Still just pushing that little bit more.

With Ben Flynn winning the first race of the 80’s just ahead of Freddie O’Connor and Daniel Smith it was anyone’s guess who could win the second moto. This was guaranteed to be an interesting race.  Flynn managed to get the holeshot just ahead of Smith but after making a mistake Smith, Jamie Foreman and Freddie O’Connor flew past Flynn.  Flynn pulled himself back up to second position but Smith had really found his feet and there was no stopping him as he smelt victory.

The open 85’s first moto saw Ben Peay fly in front to get the holeshot followed by Jamie McGarrity and Nathan Preece but by the second lap Preece had overtaken Peay.  This race was a real gladiatorial event between Preece and Peay with Peay eventually becoming the overall winner.  Peter Wise managed to pull himself up from 8th position at the start of the race to finish third.

The first moto of the 125’s had Grant Lambert storm to the first bend.  By the end of the first lap, Lambert had pulled a huge gap between himself and the other riders and there was no stopping him.  Keke St Hilaire and Gary Walton were battling it out for second and third places with Keke managing to just score over Walton.  Chris Glover was the victor in the second moto with Keke remaining consistent in second place.

Steve Swift lived up to his name as he nicked the holeshot from underneath Lance Marshall’s nose.  Marshall managed to get around Swift but Tristian Ovenden was hot on Marshall’s heels and kept the pressure on.  Chris Elisak also totted up some good points during the day.

26th May 2002 - Faygate

Report by Abbie Wise

The 6th round of the Summer Championships was held at Faygate this weekend and there was a huge turnout of riders.  Pure skill and balance was needed by all the rider's for this very slippery track and no health spa in the country could have provided so many mud face packs!

It was Anthony Twidle's best day of racing so far in the Autos.  He grabbed the hole shot ahead of Aaron Aston and by the end of the first lap there was so much space between Twidle and the rest of the pack that you could have landed a jumbo jet there!  A well-deserved victory!

The Junior's race saw a flawless performance by Scott Elderfield who bombed it to the hole shot and pulled such a gap that he was in no danger of being caught whatsoever.  Michael Rye and Tommy Rye rode well and scored some vital points.

Daniel Smith got away to a good start in the Inter 85's class.  Jamie Tempest managed to grab the lead by the third lap followed by Lloyd Evans and Daniel Smith.  Alex Foreman managed to surprise everyone though by winning the first race!

The Open 85 cc class saw Phil Sims grab the hole shot just in front of Nathan Preece and Ben Peay, but Peay managed to overtake quickly.  Preece moved into second place and then down to third after Peter Wise overtook him.  Preece managed to scramble back up to second place with Wise holding easily onto third place.

Zak Blackwell, Jack Grover, Justin Whitehead and Grant Lambert provided a very skilful performance in the 125 Senior class and it was anyone's guess as to who would grab the top points for the championship.

Justin Napier took the hole shot in the first race of the AMX class but Grant White managed to overtake him by the second bend.  Paul Willis was unstoppable and fought his way through Napier and White to led for the remainder of the race.  By the end of the second lap Willis was riding faster than David Coulthard!

Many thanks from the Committee and everyone else to Mark Webber for helping pull everyone out of the field.

12th May 2002 - Chartham

Report by Abbie Wise

The fifth round of the Summer Championships was held at Chartham this weekend.  Track conditions were excellent and there was some top racing that could teach the England team something with all the hat tricks that were scored!

Keke St Hilaire took control of the first race of the 125’s and scored a well deserved win.  The second race of the 125’s saw Grant Lambert get the hole shot followed by Gary Walton.  Lambert maintained an admirable lead and scored well.  Walton rode consistently and faultlessly throughout the day.

The AMX group saw the unstoppable Lance Marshall score a hat trick of wins.  Grant White was right behind Marshall and although he could not quite catch him he made sure that Wesley Brooks 4-stroke smelled plenty of his exhaust fumes.  Marshall really pulled away from the rest of the pack in all his races and was uncontended.

The final race of the Open 85’s saw Peter Wise grab the hole shot with both hands.  Ben Peay squeezed past him by the second bend and rode to victory with Nathan Preece in second place and Wise maintaining a healthy third position. The rest of the pack was quite a distance away from these riders and there was some good riding skills shown.  Luke Kilby and Ricky Bull maintained fourth and  fifth positions in the race.

The second race of the Inter 85’s saw Daniel Smith take the hole shot ahead of Ben Flynn and Stewart Winik.  By the third bend Winik had taken control of the race but then Flynn managed to catch him on a bend with Smith very close behind.  Flynn and Smith were really battling it out for first position and you could see the bikes racing to the max.  Whilst Flynn took victory in this race, Smith had his revenge by scoring a well deserved win in the final race of the day.  A big cheer must be raised though for Alex Foreman who was in 16th position at the beginning of the second race but steadily overtook others and scrambled up to 6th position by the end of the race.

In the first race of the Junior’s Tommy Rye was all set to win after leading the race but an unfortunate bike seizure caused Rye to lose his top position and Kray Still took control with Craig Bliss in second place.  The second race of the Junior’s saw Kray Still get the hole shot just ahead of Karl Johnson and Tommy Rye who was back to seek vengeance!  Still added another flawless race win to his belt and Tommy Rye came back with a second place.

David Collier nicked the hole shot ahead of Rhianne Preece and Max Coomber in the Auto’s.  By the end of the first lap Preece had taken the lead followed by Aaron Aston and Max Coomber.  Aston won the race followed by Preece and a good run from Coomber.  Girl power struck back in the final race of the day however when Preece absolutely flew round the track and left Aston for dust!

5/6th May 2002 - Canada Heights

Report by Abbie Wise

Some top racing was seen at the May Bank Holiday International meeting held at Canada Heights in Kent.

The 60’s, Inter 85’s and Open 85’s had double line-ups so the pressure was on to see who would qualify for the main group or the support group for each class.

In the support race of the 60’s George Gough grabbed the hole shot just ahead of Aaron Weller.  Marcus Lee Soper took the lead after the first lap and looked set to win but Gough made a final bid for victory and scored.

Luke Hawkins kept his cool in the 60’s main group and rode to victory followed by Josh Waterman.  Scott Elderfield, James Mulholland and Lewis Abbott were constantly trying to get ahead of each other.

The Inter 85’s support group saw Thomas Martin thundering away from the start gate but a small mistake after the first bend led to Stuart Winik taking control of 1st place.  By the end of the 1st lap however, Ben Flynn took the lead, and once out in front there was no stopping him.

The 4th race of the main group of the Inter 85’s saw Alan Keet take the hole shot and complete the race undisputed.  Thomas Matthews and Kristian Whatley were battling it out for second place which made for an excellent race.

Ricky Bull took the lead in the 3rd race of the supporting group of the Open 85’s.  Lee Morris overtook Bull but Bull kept his wits about him and scored his first win in this class. Sam Simmonds took control of Monday’s racing by winning both blocks and Dave Rumbold scored a satisfying second place in the first race of the day followed by Harry Ring.

Some real pulsating action was seen in the main group of the Open 85’s.  Brett Fisher took the holeshot and it seemed set in stone that he would win the 3rd race.  Jamie Smith  was hot on his heels and managed to just take Fisher on the final lap.  Some excellent riding by Brian Hartland and Jamie Skuse was also seen.

The 3rd race of the 125’s saw Rob Buckland take the lead after the 1st bend with Carl Newman in second place.  Buckland maintained his lead but Andrew Greeney really put the pressure on him and moved up to first position.  It was all chop and change though as Dustin Whitehead then pulled through into first position ahead of Greeney with Jack Grover in a respectable third position.

Ryan Lang was first out of the gates in the 3rd race of the AMX but Lee Elliot took Lang just after the hole shot.  A true battle was held between Elliot and Steve Bixby with Elliot on a 4-stroke and Bixby on his 125.  Elliot just won the race but you had to give it to Bixby – the boy did well!

It was all go for the final race of the Auto’s.  Rob Muscal and Steve Holcombe were at level-peggings after they had won 2 races apiece.  Muscal took the holeshot followed by Max Coomber.  Holcombe came flying past Coomber to make second place and then the heat was really on.  Muscal used his bike skills to the best of his ability and won the race with Holcombe in second and Danny Rye taking 3rd position.

21st April 2002 - Faygate

Report by Abbie Wise

Over 120 riders turned up this weekend for a trophy meeting at Faygate.  Track conditions were excellent and made for a good day’s racing.

Aaron Aston was as consistent as ever by winning all his races in the Auto’s with Danny Rye behind him in second.  Daniel Clark and Anthony Twidle both rode well but Clark just scored enough points to guarantee him a third place trophy.

The Junior class saw Gareth Padgett grab the hole shot but Michael Rye managed to overtake Padgett and score victories in all his races.  Kray Still was ever present in second place though and George Gough maintained a respectable 3rd place.

Ben Flynn managed to score two wins in the 85 cc class on his birthday but in the last race of the day he had a huge crash and DNF’d.  Freddie O’Connor took first place overall by scoring some useful points throughout the day.

The second race of the Open 85 cc class saw Paul Burr nick the hole shot ahead of Lee Morris.  Phil Sims promptly over took though and led for the rest of the race followed by Lee Morris and Peter Wise.   Sims went on to win the rest of his races and scored maximum points.

Grant Lambert stole the hole shot in the second race of the 125 cc class but Jack Grover promptly overtook.  Grover and Lambert were followed by Mick Sims and Gary Walton battling for third position, but there was no stopping Grover as he sailed around the course and built up a healthy distance between himself and the other riders that screamed “eat my exhaust fumes”.

In the AMX class Lance Marshall took the lead rapidly followed by Jon Cloke and Graham Heasman.  Marshall’s racing technique could not be disputed as he flew over the jumps to the best of his ability and put a large distance between himself and the other riders.  Mark Engham and Cairan Gallager battled it out for fourth position.
